Talk Thursday ~ Eat Your Veggies

Today’s talk was prompted by a recent conversation that I had with some friends.  Life long meat lovers health concerns have prompted a change in diet.  And it’s been a drastic change.  Meals that were once planned based on the meat of the day are now planned around pulses, beans and the veggies of the day.

SU and I have always been veggies lovers.  No meal is ever complete without a salad to round it out and I’ve tried to cook at least one or two meat free meals a week for the last several years.  Our meals since we’ve lived in Panama have expanded to include much more fish rather just the occasional salmon that we ate in Canada.  Overall, we do eat a healthy diet but there are still many areas that we can improve on. I’ve discovered that changing how we eat doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach. Small changes lead to bigger changes limiting how we eat to an all or nothing approach may back fire. “Poco a poco” (little by little) as they say in Panama.

Today’s talk is by Graham Hill.  Mr. Hill is Canadian and founder of TreeHugger.com as well as LifeEdited.  Both sites provide information about living well with less.  He is also the author of Weekday Vegetarian a book based on this short talk.  I found some of the statistics that Mr. Hill presented interesting.  This video is an older one but still worth viewing as I did…in the campo.

Graham Hill gives good reasons to reduce or eliminate meat cnsumption. Weekday veg is a reasonable compromise. It’s revealling that those who mock vegetarians and vegans typically don’t address Hill’s points, preferring to ignore them as if they didn’t exist.

We have a friend who eats NO VEGGIES at all. Will sit and pick out all the veggies in a meal before eating the meat. NO salads, minimal fruit, will have some dairy like cheese and ice cream. Will have desserts. Does just great eating NO Veggies!
