Talk Thursday ~ Travel as a Healer

Terror is claiming many lives, but we must not let it claim our souls as well.

One of my favourite quotes is by Pico Iyer, I’m sure I’ve written all or part of  it several times:

We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again- to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more. ~Pico Iyer ~

Aziz Abu Sarah is a Palestinian activist who lost his older brother in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  After living in a world of hatred while growing up he now has  a strange and yet simple approach to peace: Be a tourist.

  1. Thanks for sharing this Ted talk. Travel does indeed open our minds and we’ve noticed during our travels the impact that our own experiences have made on us. Instead of finger pointing and saying “those people” we have faces of people we’ve met along the way, conversations we’ve shared and smiles we’ve exchanged. “Those people” have become our friends. You’re welcome! And I totally agree

An all-inclusive resort does not constitute “travel”that’s a vacation.

Everywhere there are people, people just like me, just like you. Thanks for an excellent post.

I’ll add to what Mariah said: Especially with the dissonance & anger being dredged up by current electoral politics in the U.S., this is a timely and hopeful post. We’re all tourists on planet earth anyway, so let’s acknowledge our unique roles and move past the fear. It feels good. Thanks for posting this.

You’re welcome. I think too few people explore other cultures and if more did perhaps we would all be kinder, gentler and more understanding. Not to mention patient. 🙂

We’re watching the “show”that is the election with interest and trepidation.

I’ll just say this: because ‘the show’ as you call it, Panama is looking better all the time. Stay tuned.

I sort of listened to the debate last night whilst in the bedroom reading until I fell asleep. SU stuck with it until the power went out after Trump was asked about a wall at the Canadian border. He missed the answer when it “blipped”back on. So I looked it up for him.

Take heart, we Canadians are a thoughtful lot, we have the problem solved… http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2016/01/canada-run-for-us-president-video/

Canadate Canada, I love this! I’d vote for them. BTW, nice wall, ey!

I'd love to hear from you!
