Talk Thursday ~ The Panama Canal

One of the places that I’ve been the last few weeks is the Panama Canal.  This is by no means my first trip there but I always enjoy going to watch the ships transit, especially with someone who hasn’t visited before.

There has been an expansion project ongoing for the last few years and the project was due for completion in time for the 100th anniversary last year.  They have finally begun to fill the new lock and this short video gives a bird’s-eye view of the new lock.

    Hi Karen
My wife and I are visiting Panama from PEI Canada. Can you suggest a tour company to book a canal tour with?
    Enjoying your blog.

Would you want to transit the canal? I’ve never done that. To look for a tour group that does this my go to site is Trip Advisor There is a museum at Miraflores that cost $13.00 entry and there is an observation deck on the 4th floor where you can watch the ships come and go. Our favourite thing to do at the museum is to go in the morning and make a reservation at the restaurant for an outdoor table for lunch. The buffet is a little pricey by Panama standards but the food is beautiful and watching the boats go through the lock is pretty cool. If you don’t have a rental car there is a Metro Bus that goes there or you can take a cab. Another idea is to hire a cab to take you around the city including the museum. Don’t pay any more than $50.00 for a half day or $100.00 for a full day or you can book with a tour for a half day or full day. If you’re using a taxi agree on the price beforehand and don’t pay until the trip is finished. I would not recommend the “hop on, hop off”red bus as most people I’ve talked to say it’s overpriced, slow and generally not very good. Have fun!

  2. Nice aerial view video, thank you!

  3. Very cool! I’ve seen news though that one of the new locks is leaking water through a wall. I’d hate to be the contractor in charge of that job.

Yah, some days they act like the leak is no big deal, then other days it seems as they are going to need to do something about it. Certainly bad to be that contractor.

Yep, welcome to Panama. The land where no one wants to give disappointing news… 🙂

    • indacampo says:

Yes, I saw that too. Not sure if they’re waiting to figure out what to do or trying to find someone to do it. 🙂

I'd love to hear from you!
