Ted Talk Thursday ~ Altering Mosquitos

Haydn Parry is CEO of OITEX a company that believes that they can help governments and communities around the world keep people healthy and increase food production, and to do so in a way which is sustainable, ecologically friendly and cost-effective.  The company presents a solution to Dengue; genetically engineering male mosquitos to make them sterile, and releasing the insects to cut down on disease-carrying species.  As I mentioned earlier in the week Panama released just such a mosquito last week to help combat the Dengue outbreak that we are experiencing.

Mosquitos have killed more humans than any other creature in human history,” says Mr. Parry in today’s talk. “The mosquito has killed more humans than wars and plague.”

I hope you find this talk as interesting and relevant as I did.
